opening his eyes catch a big moon,
a moment before it disappears behind the hill to
tell later
who has not seen her reply with quiet detachment
or lukewarm assent
who was there and did not want to see,
who was not present but warning of the memories of others
witnesses distracted, but especially incredulous
of evil committed in time
moon
flat grained, old money, ghost night
memory on each measure that carries the day.
