clouds as teeth in the mouth of an alligator:
a long jaw
lurking on the water and the rest of the body hidden in the east

then the wind reduces the threat in the background, the sky in the water
glows blue pacific
and we can navigate the day
driven by the current hours

this writing,
held on the riverbank
uncertainty about its true extent, by
suspicion of the danger below the water surface,
from the perception that our weak arms
will not make us reach the other shore

notes for those who find themselves in the middle
a clear day turned into a storm, for those who
midway
sinks without hope in the current,
for those in the middle of the stream
slows the pace to avoid wasting forces
swim until sunset, but the swallows.
